Opera Unite: The One Ring to Rule them All

The browser Opera has had troubles in the past. It has never really held sway with the masses, it’s always been there as a backup for the geeks and web developers. According to W3 schools it has just now crept up to over 2% of the market share for browsers. One day they may blow our minds. This isn’t that day, but it is something cool for us to play with. I present to you: Opera Unite

Opera Unite is like Orb, Windows Home Server, a webserver and a refrigerator all rolled into one. Yes, some of those do overlap. Once you install Opera 10 on your computer you can add plugins that will share your computer with whomever you like. After Opera’s history of security issues, I hope this is safe. Trying it anyway.

Unite is their service that allows you to add plugins to the browser that will do many features such as:

  • Share Files
  • Share Photos (streamed)
  • Share Media (streamed)
  • Act as a web server
  • Host a Chat service
  • Allow others to leave messages on your home PC

From what I understand so far it also acts as a dynamic DNS forward to your Unite homepage so everyone knows where to go should your IP address lease renew. Opera Unite will also work with any other browser connecting to it, even mobile browsers.

Head on over and check them out. Link

    This… Sounds like a security nightmare. :-(
Opera has always been a “Suspect” browser in my opinion and this new functionality sounds horrific.

Or… really good for me as I will get called to fix the viri and hack attempts that are likely to stem from it’s use.
