A friend sent this to me last night. I have been complaining about Novell for months now. It looks like Novell has been working on a real time collaboration tool for quite some time now. Honestly it looks better than Wave and has more functionality (please forgive me oh great Google gods). According to sources Novell’s Pulse will work seemlessly with Google Wave. I’m really hoping that is true. Novell has the power to make this work, but not the sense to put it out there for us to play with.

Check out the video. It looks really good for a corporate environment. More info is Here

IIS 5 ans IIS 6 File Transfer Protocol has not been attacked yet but has flaws allowing a possible attack. Code for attacking this weak spot have been posted on Milw0rm.org. Only older versions of IIS are affected and only when FTP is enabled.

US-CERT recommended that all anonymous FTP write access be disabled, and Microsoft announced that it is investigating the matter and will decide how to go from there once said investigation has concluded.

Way to jump all over it, Microsoft.

Vanish is a project where you set a timer on a blog post, email or even a facebook entry. When the timer runs out the information is encrypted and no one can read it afterwards. Sounds good to me.

From the website: “For example, using the Firefox Vanish plugin, a user can create an email, a Google Doc document, a Facebook message, or a blog comment — specifying that the document or message should “vanish” in 8 hours. Before that 8-hour timeout expires, anyone who has access to the data can read it; however after that timer expires, nobody can read that web content — not the user, not Google, not Facebook, not a hacker who breaks into the cloud service, and not even someone who obtains a warrant for that data. That data — regardless of where stored or archived prior to the timeout — simply self-destructs and becomes permanently unreadable.”

Sounds interestingly cool but I can already see a hole in this theory. Copy/Paste. In general you should never put anything on the web that you are not prepared to come back and bite you in the rumpus. I am the worst at doing this myself, but do as I say…you know the rest.

This does look to be a good step in the right direction as far as online security goes. Hopefully this is one of the first steps in creating a large movement in data protection in the cloud.

Check out the video and visit the site. Let me know what you think. Link

UPDATE: Tweetdeck did not jump the shark with their new iPhone app and updates to the desktop version. They jumped in the pool, wrestled the shark by hand and ripped it’s eyes out, sucking the little sharkbrain out of the sockets for good measure. I have been on the iPhone app for several hours now and really haven’t found one complaint. It’s fast even onmy poor old ver1 iPhone, it’s easy and intuitive to manipulate. Sync worked flawlessly with my desktop even on Edge. I was able to add the other twitter account that I use with a simple couple of clicks and a login. I expect this to be big news tomorrow.

Tweetdeck (our unabashedly favorite twitter client) has rolled out some cool new features.

First off let’s talk about the iPhone app. Supposedly it comes out this today at 9P.M. PST. I’m waiting to see what comes of that rumor. But I hope that it’s true. Besides the basic twitter functionality of sending and receiving tweets on your iPhone you’ll be able to:

Manage multiple Twitter accounts.

Use columns to create your personal dashboard.

Simply sync to set-up

Continuously updates between your desktop and iPhone.

Create Groups to easily follow all your friends.

Follow topics in real-time with saved searches.

Share photos with Twitpic and YFrog.

Shorten links with your favorite URL shortener.

Shake your iPhone to refresh columns.

Here’s some pics from the iPhone app.

The biggest and coolest thing about the changes rolled out from tweetdeck is the sync feature. You will be able to sync all of your computers and your iPhone to handle the same account setup and even column groupings. So if you make a change to your groups on your desktop they are reflected on the iPhone and vice versa.

The desktop version of Tweetdeck also has some cool changes. It too can handle multiple accounts now. I just posted the same post from 2 seperate accounts at the exact same time. Makes it easy, almost too easy, for people who are interested in twitter marketing (spam). You can preview a shortened URL before you go jumping into some pornographic den of iniquity or to a spam page full of nasty malware.

And of course since Tweedeck runs on Adobe Air, it can run on Linux, Mac and Windows. Score one for Adobe on that BTW. As Soon as I get the iPhone version I will post some pics here. Head on over and check it out. TWEETDECK

And here is the link for the iPhone app. Tweetdeck for iPhone

Both of the software security companies have agreed to settle a NYC lawsuit costing them $375,000 each. Both firms were sued by the NYC District Attorney General Andrew M Cuomo for automatically charging customers for subscription renewals that they had inadvertently agreed to. The charges were hidden in a long webpage or in the terms of service. Says Cuomo “Companies cannot play hide the ball when it comes to the fees consumers are being charged…” and “Consumers have a right to know what they are paying, especially when they are unwittingly agreeing to renewal fees.”

Not only has both companies agreed to pay settlement monies, but they both now send electronic notices before and after posting a charge to a consumers account. They also allow for refunds for up to 60 days after a charge is made.

From the original article. “The Attorney General’s office began an investigation into the two companies after receiving complaints that customers were being charged for renewal subscriptions without their consent.”

When I discovered Softperfect Network Scanner while at work on day I thought I had died and gone to that great blade server in the sky. It will scan though a whole subnet or domain. It will tell you the logged on user, OS, MAC, ping time and of course host name. You can drill down into the host and see what hidden shares it is using plus what services it is running.

This program is an IT person’s dream. It is also an IT person’s nightmare. It requires no install so it is completely portable. It rides in my pocket everyday.

It has a plethora of advance features including import/export features, filters and auto-detect range. Give it a try. You’ll be hooked.

From the site:

Pings computers.

Does not require administrative privileges.

Detects hardware (MAC) addresses even across routers.

Detects hidden shared folders (normally invisible on the network) and write accessible shares.

Detects your internal and external IP addresses.

Scans for listening TCP ports and SNMP services.

Retrieves currently logged-on users.

You can mount and explore network resources.

Can launch external third party applications.

Exports results to HTML, XML, CSV and TXT

Supports Wake-On-LAN, remote shutdown and sending network messages.

Retrieves potentially any information via WMI.

It is absolutely free, requires no installation, and does not contain any adware/spyware/malware.

Softperfect also offers other free tools as well as sold tools. Please be kind and donate if you download the free tools.
