Have You Sprayed Your New Skin On Today?

Wake Forest University researchers have developed a technique to help burn victims heal much more quickly. Spray on skin. No kidding. The process was taken from the inkjet printer, and sprays cell onto the open wound. A laser maps the wound for area and depth which directs the machine to place specific cells in specific areas of the wound.

Student and one of the developers, Kyle Binder, stated;

“We literally print the cells directly onto the wound. We can put specific cells where they need to go.”"You have to give a lot of credit to the cells. When you put them into the wound, they know what to do,” Binder said.

The spraying method even places stem cells right where they are needed the most. These cells can even regrow hair folicles.

Tests on mice have shown recovery times of up to three weeks faster than those not treated. Pigs are next on the list since their skin more closely resembles ours. Another instance of Star Trek brought to reality.

Modern Geek

Gone are the day of the pocket protector wearing, computer geek. The geek of the new decade is a different breed. The modern geek is, first and foremost, a professional. Yes, we still love Star Wars and Star Trek, and we may collect an action figure here and there, but we are not fanboys/fangirls. For 2KX I have compiled a list of “should do’s” for the geek of the new decade.

1. If you don’t already speak it, learn English. There is a reason Linus Torvalds does all of his Linux in English as opposed to his native language, Finnish. English has many more words than most any other languages. It is a mongrel language, made up of its own words and adaptations of words from almost every other language in the world. This gives English the ability to be a highly technical language.

2. Learn geekspeek. NetLingo.com and the Urban Dictionary are great places to learn the varied words that make up our unique style of talking, IMHO

3. Learn a programming language. It doesn’t matter which language you learn first, and knowing the ins and outs of ipconfig doesn’t count. Python is one of the easier languages to learn. It really doesn’t matter which you choose to learn first, all the languages share certain commonalities that make learning additional languages easier.

4. Study a martial art. Again it doesn’t really matter which style you take, just find one that suits you.

5. Update your wardrobe. T-shirts and jeans are fine for around the house, but you are a professional now. Dress like it. Get a GQ magazine and look through it, then hit the stores. Spend wisely. Go to stores like Target and Kohl’s offer good looking, updated clothes at much lower prices.

6. Be comfortable in your own skin. We are geeks. We control the content of the world. Without us the net and the planet it controls comes to a stop. We are no longer “that nerd.” Be proud. Above all, just be.

What No Man Has Watched Before

OK, well plenty of people have seen it, but the original pilot that has never been officially released will be included in the Season 3 original Star Trek DVD release. Until now this version could only be found in the bootleg arenas. Memory-Alpha.org had this to say about it:

There is a different, pre-broadcast cut of (“Where No One Has Gone Before”) in the archives of the Smithsonian Institution. This unique cut includes a few brief scenes trimmed from the aired cut of the episode, different opening titles, and a unique closing theme. The alternate closing theme can be heard on the GNP Crescendo CD Star Trek: Original Series (Volume 1) “The Cage” / “Where No Man Has Gone Before”. The pre-broadcast cut is commercially available only in bootleg form, although it has been screened at numerous conventions. Paul Carr was credited as “Navigator” in the end credits of the original cut. The version on the first season box set may contain the alternate ending theme, but does have the changed credits. This cut will be finally be available commercially on the Season 3 Blu-Ray set.

Scent of a Geek

It is here and it smells. Has Star Trek finally reached the final frontier? Geeks rejoice for the world of colognes has finally recognized you. Red Shirt, Tiberius, and Pon Farr are the new scents from Star Trek for nerds everywhere. Pon Farr is for women, though I wonder about the name. If you don’t actually know, Pon Farr is the time when Vulcans go into heat. That’s great if you imagine Jolene Blalock in the throws of Vulcan passion but not if all you can see is Spock.
Red Shirt is pointed at the younger man while Tiberius seems to be made for the more mature male who needs a more “commanding” scent. All three scents are marketed at $30 pre bottle.

Personally, I’m ecstatic that “The Wrath of Kahn” was not chosen as a name, that or “qagh” (Klingon dish of live worm like creatures eaten live). Yes, by the way, I am married and have children.

It’ been three years since Tony Alleyne showed his Star Trek themed apartment, but with the new Star Trek flick out I thought that we needed another look at his geek-chic flat.
